My favorite memory from Antarctica. Waking up to a dark and dreary sky as we go over our morning plans at the staff meeting. We launch zodiacs in preparation for an exploration around Anvers Island. I hop into Zodiac number 9 and detach the crane arm that just lowered me and my camera case to the water. Just as I finished stashing away the rope in the bow box the sun tears through the clouds in a marvelous beam of light. I couldn’t miss the chance to find the nearest floating berg and snap some photos with it in the foreground and the surprise visitor in the background. After a few different frames with different compositions and settings I put the camera away in my case, sat down and took it all in. Floating in a vessel with inflatable sides alone for the moment at the bottom of the world. Could’ve been a few minutes, could’ve been an hour, I was entranced. Then over the radio came “all zodiac drivers we will now begin disembarking guests on the port side.” I knew right away the first place I was going to take my guests.
